Calendar Highlights

Dreaming the Emerald City

What type of paintings did Seattle’s art patrons choose to purchase 100 years ago? Frye Art Museum is currently exhibiting works from the collections of Horace C. Henry and Charles and Emma Frye – founders of the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington and the Frye Art Museum, respectively. Dreaming the Emerald City brings together examples from these two foundational Seattle collections for the first time, as well as archival photographs and historic exhibition catalogues from both museums. 10am-5pm Tuesdays-Saturdays, noon-5pm Sundays, 10am-8pm Thursdays through April 6, 2008. FREE. 704 Terry Ave., Seattle. 206-622-9250. www.fryeart.org.

Christmas at Meeker Mansion

Meeker Mansion is decked out for the holidays. The 1890 mansion was built by pioneer Ezra Meeker and features 17 rooms, a ballroom, widow’s walk, six fireplaces, hand-stenciled ceiling artwork, elegant woodwork and stained glass. Open for tours, cookies and warm apple cider. Noon-4pm Wednesdays-Sundays through Dec. 20. $4, $3 students and seniors, $2 children, half price Thursdays. 312 Spring St., Puyallup. 253-848-1770. www.meekermansion.org.

Sport Stacking

Sport stacking is as fascinating to watch as it is fun to do, but it’s hard to explain without visual aids. Competitors stack and unstack cups in a predetermined order for individual times or in team relays. Find out what the excitement is about at Bellevue Family YMCA 4-5pm Tuesdays in Dec. $40 ($20 facility members). 14230 Bel-Red Rd., Bellevue. 425-746-9077. www.bellevueymca.org.

Volunteer for Puppets

Northwest Puppet Center is looking for volunteers to run the concession stand during the Dec. 8-23 run of Madeline and the Gypsies. Adult volunteers may bring two children ages 3 and older. Volunteers get to see the show FREE. Call for specific dates and times (approximate 2.25 hour commitment). Northwest Puppet Center, 9123 15th Ave. NE, Seattle. 206-523-2579. www.nwpuppet.org.
