Calendar Highlights

Home for the Holidays
The Museum of History and Industry's new exhibit, Norman Rockwell's Home for the Holidays, offers a nostalgic look at holidays past. The exhibit, from the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, includes 40 original covers from The Saturday Evening Post magazine, which depict holidays ranging from Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day to Valentine’s Day and April Fool’s Day.

Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) had an enduring relationship with The Saturday Evening Post. His first cover was published in 1916 when he was just 22, his last in 1963. He created a total of 322 covers for the popular magazine, with subject matter ranging from silly to weighty. Rockwell was one of the most popular artists of the 20th century. His illustrations could be found in other respected magazines of the time such as Boys’ Life, Ladies’ Home Journal, McCall’s, Literary Digest and Look. He also was commissioned to illustrate children’s books, national advertising campaigns, U.S. postal stamps and four presidential portraits.

Rockwell had the ability to encapsulate an idea in a single image with amazing clarity. His art seemed to encompass the values thought to be important by middle class, small-town America. Viewing Rockwell’s work can be like turning the pages of an intimate family photo album.

If you visit the museum after Nov. 12, be sure to see Essential Seattle, a new permanent exhibit that focuses on the fascinating and diverse people who shaped the greater Seattle area. Another exhibit, Picturing the Century: One Hundred Years of Photography from the National Archives, captures the far-reaching changes of the last hundred years through photographs that depict both momentous events and ordinary people. Through Dec. 17.

10am-5pm daily, 10am-8pm first Thursdays through Jan. 15, 2007 (closed at 3pm Dec. 24 and 31, closed Nov. 23 and Dec. 25). Included with museum admission. $7, $5 ages 5-17 and seniors, free ages 4 and younger. McCurdy Park, 2700 24th Ave. E, Seattle. 206-324-1126. www.seattlehistory.org.
