November 2005 Editor's Note: Bringing Seattle's Child Home We’re excited to announce that beginning with this issue, Seattle’s Child is again a homegrown, home-owned magazine. United Parenting Publications, a division of Trader Publishing Company, has decided to leave the parenting market in the Puget Sound area. Seattle’s Child and its sister publication, Puget Sound Parent, are now owned by Northwest Parent Media and continue to be published locally by Linda Watson. All of the same staff, with deep local roots, will continue to bring you parenting news, events and advertising each month. Publisher Linda Watson grew up in Spain,
in Peru and in various places around the United States, coming to the
Puget Sound area 10 years ago. She lives in a charming old house on Bainbridge
Island. Publishing Seattle’s Child and Puget
Sound Parent allows her to combine her respect and support for
parents with her decades of experience with small businesses and with
educational companies, including The Learning Company.

Editor Wenda Reed grew up in south Seattle, attending Dunlap Elementary School and Rainier Beach (then a junior-senior high school) and earning a journalism degree from Washington State University. She wrote for and edited a chain of weekly newspapers in Seattle before taking time off when her children were little. She began writing for Puget Sound Parent and Seattle’s Child in 1996, becoming associate editor in 2001 and editor in 2003. She and her husband Larry raised their children in the Wallingford neighborhood in Seattle and the Juanita area of Kirkland, and have just moved to Bothell. They have a son Nathan, 23, and a daughter Colleen, 20. Calendar Editor Chris Stay is part of the fourth generation of her family to live in the Puget Sound region. She lives with her husband in Edmonds, and they are the parents of two grown children. For the past four years, she has enjoyed keeping families with children informed about entertaining, educational and affordable events and classes in our area. Carol Stripling, director of community relations, was born and raised in Seattle, attended Ingraham High School and majored in communications at the University of Washington. She had a long career in broadcasting, doing promotions and marketing for some of Western Washington’s top radio stations, before doing freelance public relations work with major Northwest companies and nonprofit organizations and serving as director of marketing for The Children’s Museum in Seattle. She started writing articles for Seattle’s Child and Puget Sound Parent in 2003 and currently organizes and markets events, including November’s Education & Enrichment Fair and the annual Tools for Parents lecture series. Office manager Diana Lightner has been a Seattle resident for 33 years, growing up in the Mount Baker and Queen Anne neighborhoods. She graduated from the Northwest School and the University of Washington and has worked for many years in the local advertising industry. She and her husband Rick Brady live in Seattle’s Central District with their son Cash, born Aug. 6, 2005 at Swedish Hospital. Advertising salesperson Eva Newman was also born and raised in Seattle, attending Emerson Elementary School and Kennedy High School. She has worked in the local advertising, marketing and sales fields for more than 20 years. She and her husband Frank live in West Seattle with their son Daniel, 16, and daughter Jennifer, 4. Coni Idler, advertising salesperson for the Eastside, grew up in Hawaii and has lived in the Puget Sound area for 15 years, working in local media markets. She and her husband Peter Conway are building a home in Carnation. They have a daughter Meghan, 5, (who has just made her a “soccer mom”) and a son, Zach, 2. Robin Lucas, advertising representative for south King County, was raised in the Pierce County area and graduated from Pacific Lutheran University. She is deeply involved in south Puget Sound community affairs and lives in Edgewood with her husband, Mark, and daughters Madison, 8, and Morgan, 4. Designer Garit Reuble grew up in Sumas, Washington, and studied fine art and graphic design at the Northwest College of Art in Poulsbo, graduating in 1999. He has been a designer with Seattle’s Child and Puget Sound Parent since 2000. He and his longtime partner Brian live in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle with his two cats Cage and Tag. As Seattle’s Child continues its 26th year, we all look forward to bringing you the most comprehensive listing of local events and the best practical parenting information for the years to come. Thank you for reading Seattle’s Child. Wenda Reed, Editor |
