Calendar Highlights

Eric Carle
Children’s author and illustrator Eric Carle will be well represented in both Seattle and Tacoma this month. Carle is famous for his use of spare but rich language and bold, colorful collage art in his books for young readers. He has an impressive bibliography of over 70 works, from the classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has sold more than 22 million copies, to his latest book, 10 Little Rubber Ducks.

The Art of Eric Carle opens at Tacoma Art Museum Oct. 7. This traveling exhibit is from The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts. Visitors will be able to see how Carle creates his unique and instantly recognizable designs when they view more than 50 original works on paper from such classics as The Very Hungry Cricket, Mister Seahorse, and 10 Little Rubber Ducks. This latest book was actually inspired by the story of a Tacoma-bound ship that lost part of its cargo at sea – 29,000 rubber ducks! Check online for special programs and workshops that will take place at Tacoma Art Museum, Children’s Museum of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Libraries during the exhibit’s run. 10am-5pm Tuesdays-Saturdays, noon-5pm Sundays, 10am-8pm third Thursdays, Oct. 7-Jan. 21, 2007. $7.50, $6.50 students, military and seniors, free ages 5 and younger, $25 per family (two adults and up to four ages 17 and younger). 1701 Pacific Ave., Tacoma. 253-272-4258. www.tacomaartmuseum.org.
