The Full Plate
We introduce our new monthly section on
food and nutrition with a look at “The Family Meal: What Does it
Take to Gather ‘Round the Table?” Readers share their ideas
for making this all-important time together work – from filling
up grocery carts with the right foods to dads doing the cooking and kids
helping in the kitchen, along with tried-and-true short cuts and hints
for being flexible.
Local Chicana Artist Contributes to Anthology
When Seattle artist Cecilia Alvarez was
asked to contribute to a new anthology, On My Block: Stories and Paintings
by Fifteen Artists, she had no trouble finding inspiration in her childhood,
lived on both sides of the California-Mexico border and in her abuelita’s
(grandmother’s) colorful garden.

Educating Mom:
New Seattle Schools Superintendent
Linda Thomas’ “Educating Mom”
blog for the Seattle PI was
its most-read blog from February to June, 2007. You’ll now find
her column, by the same name, running monthly in Seattle’s
Child. This month, she interviews
Maria Goodloe-Johnson, new superintendent for Seattle Public Schools.
Literacy Initiatives:
Start the School Year Reading
Children in Seattle schools will start the
school year reading with two new initiatives – one to put libraries
with more than 500 books in each K-2 classroom and one to encourage students
to “Read a Million Words.” See how other local districts have
worked to increase literacy in the younger grades.
