Sandfest
Seattle brings the beach to the city this month during Countrywide Home
Loans Seattle Sandfest, benefiting The Moyer Foundation. This is the fourth
year for the festival, the main feature of which are the elaborate, detailed
sand carvings. Orbital Sanders, an internationally renowned team of professional
sand sculptors from Seattle, will take three days to carve the flagship
sand sculptures. A new attraction this year will be the (approximately)
10 corporate sculpting teams, which will create additional works of art
for the public to enjoy.
Aug. 25, drop by 8:30am-6pm to watch the sand teams carve the sculptures
(enjoy live music 4-6pm). Aug. 26, the urban beach festival will be in
full swing 11:30am-4:30pm, with live music, sand team competition, kids’
activities and retail activities. FREE. Festivities take place in Westlake
Park (401 Pine St., Seattle), Westlake Plaza (Fourth Ave. and Pine St.,
Seattle) and on Pine St. between Fourth and Fifth, as well as between

Passport to Adventure
Get the kids off the couch and onto a hiking trail
this summer with a hiking journal from REI. Kids who complete five hikes
by the end of August receive prizes. Directions to recommended local hikes
as well as tips for keeping kids happy on the trail are also available

Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit
Bellevue Downtown Park is the site for the seventh biennial Bellevue Sculpture
Exhibition. 40 original pieces from the United States, Canada and Europe
are on view through Oct. 9 in the park (10201 NE Fourth St., Bellevue),
as well as indoors and outdoors at the new Bellevue City Hall (450 110th

Picturing the Century
View 100 years of photography from the National Archives when the traveling
exhibit Picture the Century opens at the Museum of History & Industry
Aug. 5. Nearly 160 images give a whirlwind journey through the 20th century.

Postcards from YOU
In the PBS kids’ series Postcards from Buster, Buster Baxter
makes video postcards of kids and families across North America. Now kids
have an opportunity to make their own one-minute video postcards to submit
to a video competition. Winning entries will be broadcast in upcoming
episodes of the series or posted on the Website. Theme suggestions, contest
rules and filming tips are available online. Submissions due by Aug. 31.

HERSHEY’S® Cocoa Classic
Now’s the time to sharpen your baking skills. HERSHEY’S
Cocoa Classic is a kids’ baking contest, open to Washington residents
ages 8-18. Entries must be prepared using HERSHEY’S baking products,
and winners receive cash prizes.
The contest will be held 1pm Sept. 2 at the Evergreen State Fair. Rules
and contest details can be found online, under the Exhibits/Exhibitor's
