Play & Learn

Museum of Glass Celebrates Milestone
Tacoma’s Museum of Glass turns five this year, and the public is
invited to a birthday party July 6-8. Festivities at the three-day celebration
include hands-on activities, family storytelling sessions, flame-working
and break dance demonstrations, special cone-themed treats and more.
Admission to all three of the major Tacoma museums will be discounted to $5 July 6-8. In addition to Museum of Glass (1801 Dock St., Tacoma. 866-468-7386. www.museumofglass.org), be sure to visit the nearby Tacoma Art Museum (1701 Pacific Ave., Tacoma. 253-272-4258. www.tacomaartmuseum.org) as well as Washington State History Museum (1911 Pacific Ave., Tacoma. 888-238-4373. www.wshs.org). The museums are within walking distance of one another, and all are open 10am-5pm July 6-7, noon-5pm July 8.
Rusty the Singing Pig
Look for an unusual statue in front of McCaw Hall – Rusty the Pig.
He is one of the “Pigs on Parade” created to celebrate the
100th anniversary of Pike Place Market. What makes Rusty unusual is that
he was engineered by Seattle Opera Scenic Studios to sing. Pass by his
snout, and you may be rewarded with a short Italian aria, “La Canzone
del Maiale” (voiced by baritone John Boehr). Rusty performs a maximum
of once every five minutes, and he also takes breaks during the day, so
visitors never quite know when he’ll will be inspired to sing. He
will grace the front of McCaw Hall until September. 321 Mercer St., Seattle.
Gig Harbor Serves Up Art
“Drawing You In” is Gig Harbor’s summer offering to
artists. Beginning July 11, live models will strike 20-minute poses (a
special request is always out for models with colorful costumes and ethnic
clothing). Artists must bring their own drawing or painting supplies,
but easels and art horses are available to use. 1-4pm Wednesdays, weather
