Seattle International Film Festival is for Families, Too!

Films4Families
Thoughtful films for families are offered as part of the Seattle International Film Festival. The Films4Families series gives families and young people of all ages a chance to view the best movies by young-at-heart filmmakers from around the world. 206-324-9996. www.seattlefilm.org.

Arctic Tale is an epic adventure that explores the beautiful icebound world of the Great North. 4pm June 16 or 11am June 17. All ages. $5. Neptune Theatre, 1303 NE 45th St., Seattle.

The Family Picture Show is the festival’s annual selection of family-oriented shorts for ages 4-adult. 11am June 16. $5. SIFF Cinema, Seattle Center, 321 Mercer St., Seattle.

Swashbuckler Saturdays
In addition to the Films4Families series, SIFF offers this series of vintage adventure films, which are also good family fare. Recommended for ages 10 and older.

Captain Blood (1935) stars Errol Flynn as English physician Peter Blood, who escapes bondage on a Jamaican sugar plantation to become a pirate on the high seas. 1pm June 2. $7. SIFF Cinema, Seattle Center, 321 Mercer St., Seattle.

Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (1944) shows Ali Baba, after his father is killed by the soldiers of Hugalu Khan, being brought up by the 40 Thieves of Baghdad. 1:30pm June 9. $7. SIFF Cinema, Seattle Center, 321 Mercer St., Seattle.

Scaramouche (1952) is a swashbuckler action adventure set in pre-revolutionary France, starring Stewart Granger and Eleanor Parker. 1:30pm June 16. $7. SIFF Cinema, Seattle Center, 321 Mercer St., Seattle.

Calendar Hot Tips

Free Fishing Days
June 2-10 is National Fishing and Boating Week. Washington’s free fishing days are June 9 and 10, when freshwater and saltwater licenses are waived for residents. For a listing of local fishing events, visit www.takemefishing.org.

New Space Exhibit
Head to the Museum of Flight June 10 and be among the first to see the new exhibit Space: Exploring the New Frontier. Walk through a full-sized International Space Station. View actual Moon rocks, a 1940s German rocket engine and movie memorabilia from October Sky. See reproductions of a lunar rover, Mercury capsule and Sputnik 1 satellite, along with a real Russian space capsule, a U.S. command module and the Mars Viking III Lander. 10am-5pm daily. Keep it Local
Find local farmers markets, area farms for u-pick or farm stand sales, summer county fairs, seasonal harvest charts, recipes and more in the 2007 Puget Sound Fresh Farm Guide. It can be picked up at local libraries. The Puget Sound Fresh Web site features an easily searchable database of farms, crops and farmers markets, and also educates consumers on reasons to buy locally and preserve farmland. www.pugetsoundfresh.org.

Out of This World
The new exhibit Out of This World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television opens at Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum June 16th. It includes more than 30 costumes and related objects from science fiction films and TV programs such as Star Wars, Terminator, Star Trek and Batman. June 16-Sept. 30.

June 16th is also Family Day at EMP/SFM (11am-3pm). Work on an art project related to the new exhibit, participate in a fashion show (wear a science fiction costume) and tour the exhibit Disney: The Music Behind the Magic (2pm). On-Line Kids’ Game
Go to the Northwest Trek Web site for a fun, kid-friendly feature. Click on the illustrated Northwest Trek scene on the home page. It will take you to a drag-and-drop picture-making program with Northwest native animals and landscape images that can be placed anywhere in the picture. Place a bear under a bush, make a butterfly larger than a snake, or fly a Northwest Trek tram in the sky. Add a moon, and watch the sky turn dark. www.nwtrek.org.

The Artful Piano
Bellevue Arts Museum and Sherman Clay of Bellevue are sponsoring The Artful Piano, displaying five one-of-a-kind pianos in the museum’s lobby. Artists and designers Dale Chihuly, Karl Lagerfeld, Jon Eric Byers, Thomas Schrunk and Joseph Sidorowicz created the pianos. On display through June 10. 10am-5:30pm Tuesdays-Thursdays, 10am-9pm Fridays, 10am-5:30pm Saturdays, 11am-5:30pm Sundays.
