Hot Tips

Healthy Kids Day

This annual event sponsored by YMCA of Greater Seattle promotes one hour of physical activity per day for children. The April 12 event features fun activities and games for kids, plus health and wellness resources for families. 10am-2pm. FREE. Local events take place at Auburn Valley YMCA, Bellevue Family YMCA, Federal Way Norman Center YMCA (at Commons Mall), Highline YMCA, Lake Heights Family YMCA (at Renton Lions Youth Camp), Meredith Mathews East Madison YMCA, Northshore YMCA, Shoreline/South County Family YMCA (at Echo Lake Park), University YMCA and West Seattle Family YMCA. 206-382-5003. www.seattleymca.org.

Spruce up Pierce County Parks

For the 7th year, individuals and families can spend a morning volunteering in a Pierce County Park. No pre-registration is necessary; just show up ready to work. Dress for the weather, and bring work gloves and gardening tools, if available (be sure to label them). Pick up a free pair of gardening gloves (one pair per person) prior to the event at HomeStreet Bank, 3315 S 23rd St., Tacoma or 10802 Gravelly Lake Dr. SW, Lakewood. Bookmark

University Book Store is sponsoring its annual bookmark contest, open to kids in grades K-8. This year’s theme is “Books Take You Places.” Original artwork is a must, as artwork in books is copyrighted material. Winners in four age divisions will see their bookmarks displayed and distributed in stores. FREE. Entries must be received by store closing time on April 11. Entry forms are available at University Book Stores in the University District, Bellevue, Mill Creek and Tacoma. 206-634-3400. Poets Wanted

View the landscapes in Veiled Northwest: Photographs by Mary Randlett at Tacoma Art Museum, along with the work of former poet laureate Denise Levertov, then, in honor of National Poetry Month, write your thoughts in poem form. Visitors may write in a special poetry notebook available in the gallery throughout April, and then it will be given to Mary Randlett. 10am-5pm Tuesdays-Saturdays, noon-5pm Sundays, 10am-8pm third Thursdays. $7.50, $6.50 students, military and seniors, free ages 5 and younger, $25 family, free third Thursdays. 1701 Pacific Ave., Tacoma. 253-272-4258. www.tacomaartmuseum.org.
