April 2006

Sleepless in America
Is your child “bad” or is he exhausted? In her work counseling families and leading parenting classes, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka began to see that temper tantrums, whining, fighting and inflexibility were often associated with lack of sleep. As she read the research and interviewed the experts, the link became clearer. She advocates a higher priority on sleep in her new book, Sleepless in America, but does not recommend a rigid “one size fits all” for every family.

Birthday Parties to Keep Kids Moving
Our annual birthday party guide emphasizes active celebrations, from simple ones you plan in a local park to dozens of places where your child and her guests can climb, swim, jump, skate or somersault. We also list a variety of other options, from crafts and science to magic and dress-up.
