Children’s Hospital Celebrates
100 Years
When the small son of Anna Clise died of inflammatory rheumatism in Seattle
in 1898, there were only six pediatricians in the whole country and most
doctors treated children as “small adults.” Clise and a group
of dedicated women raised funds to build a small “Fresh Air Cottage”
for sick children in 1907. They planted the seeds for Children’s
Hospital and Regional Medical Center, now one of the nation’s leading
children’s hospitals with the goal of becoming a leader in biomedical
research in the coming decades. Read about this fascinating history, as
well as the personal stories of two mothers whose daughters were treated
at Children’s.
Out & About: Places to See Winter Animals
When it’s cold outside, we may slow down, but many animals, including
wolves, polar bears and reindeer, become more active. Three of the best
places to see them are in the South Sound area, at Wolf Haven, Northwest
Trek and Point Defiance Zoo. Round off your winter excursions with a trip
to Cougar Mountain Zoo in Issaquah, home of one of the country’s
largest reindeer herds.
Out & About: A Walk in the
Park with Art
After much anticipation, Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture
Park opens this month on the Seattle waterfront. Take a virtual tour of
the natural settings and the contemporary works of art with a child’s
imagination and sense of wonder. Grand opening ceremonies for the free
park are Jan. 20 and 21.
