Calendar Highlights
Disney: The Music Behind the Magic
If you’ve ever caught yourself (or your child) humming a Disney
tune (and who hasn’t?), you’ll want to head to Experience
Music Project for an interactive exhibit that opened this past fall. EMP
is honoring the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney Records with the exhibition
Disney: The Music Behind the Magic. Included are artifacts, film clips
and interactive games that celebrate the innovative ways Disney has used
music in productions, ranging from the early Mickey Mouse cartoon Steamboat
Willie to the upcoming Broadway production of Mary Poppins.
Artifacts in the exhibit include such nostalgic gems as a Davy Crockett
coonskin hat, animation storyboards, Mickey Mouse Club outfits, vintage
records, costumes from some of Disney’s Broadway hits and innovative
sound effects instruments.
Short film clips feature pieces from Disney’s animated movies.
Interpretive videos include Disney artists and experts explaining different
aspects of how Disney has used music over the years: in early animated
films, Disney’s 1980s animated musical “rebirth” and
in its theatrical musicals. Experts offer an examination of how Disney’s
music has influenced popular music and culture.
Hands-on experiences for visitors include activities for all ages. The
Disney Music Challenge places visitors in a game-show setting and has
them answer questions about Disney melodies, lyrics, composers and performers.
The Sound Effects Challenge lets visitors create and record their own
sound effects for a Disney cartoon. Remix Disney Hits gives visitors an
education in how a Disney recording is made, then offers them a chance
to remix hit songs from the Disney repertoire.
Disney: The Music Behind the Magic remains at EMP until September
5, when it will travel to other national and international venues. 10am-5pm
Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10am-6pm Fridays-Sundays. Included
with admission. $19.95, $15.95 seniors and military, $14.95 ages 7-17,
free ages 6 and younger. 325 Fifth Ave. N, Seattle. 206-770-2700. www.emplive.org.
